Google Chrome icon missing after running google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb on DEBIAN

just run as root

cp /opt/google/chrome/google-chrome.desktop /usr/share/applications/

This puts Google Chrome in your normal Applications > Internet menu. At this point you can simply add it to the top panel as follows:

Right click on top panel & select Add to Panel
Select Application Launcher 
Expand the Internet menu item and select Google Chrome
